Exhibiting in LA / Anaheim: what to know
What we check for every LA / Anaheim show, with sources. We handle all of it as part of the all-in price.
How drayage is billed
Drayage (material handling) is billed per hundredweight (cwt = 100 lb), rounded up to the next 100 lb, usually with a 200 lb (2 cwt) minimum per shipment; it covers moving freight from dock or warehouse to the booth, storing empty crates, and returning it to the dock after the show. Cost = rate x (weight / 100). Special handling (uncrated, loose, ground unload) and overtime cost more; late arrivals after the warehouse deadline get a surcharge. Some contractors (Freeman, GES Material Handling+) now bill per pound instead of per cwt.
Labor rules
- Southern California: Decorators Local 831 claims set-up/dismantle of exhibits, signs and carpet (source 1, 2)
- LA Auto Show (2017-18) and Anaheim GES rules (2012): your staff may set up a display only if one person can do it in under 30 minutes without tools; otherwise union labor from the official contractor (source 1, 2)
- AAM MuseumExpo 2025 at LACC: one full-time employee may install/dismantle if done in one hour or less without tools source
- Your full-time staff may work one-to-one alongside a union installer source
- Hand-carry only what one person carries in one trip, no dollies or hand trucks source
Drayage (moving your freight to the booth)
- Natural Products Expo West 2021 at ACC (GES): late-to-warehouse +30%, special handling +30%, uncrated +60%, off-target +25%; return-to-warehouse $37.00/cwt (10 cwt min); storage $11.05/cwt/month source
- Freeman at Anaheim (NAMM Show): per-pound model with freight above the included allowance billed at $1.55/lb; this allowance structure starts with NAMM 2027 source
Shipping deadlines
- Anaheim Convention Center does not receive or ship event materials; all freight goes through the show's general contractor source
