Exhibiting in Phoenix: what to know
What we check for every Phoenix show, with sources. We handle all of it as part of the all-in price.
How drayage is billed
Drayage (material handling) is billed per hundredweight (cwt = 100 lb), rounded up to the next 100 lb, usually with a 200 lb (2 cwt) minimum per shipment; it covers moving freight from dock or warehouse to the booth, storing empty crates, and returning it to the dock after the show. Cost = rate x (weight / 100). Special handling (uncrated, loose, ground unload) and overtime cost more; late arrivals after the warehouse deadline get a surcharge. Some contractors (Freeman, GES Material Handling+) now bill per pound instead of per cwt.
Labor rules
- Arizona is a right-to-work state, but union labor is still required for some exhibit handling (GES Phoenix work rules, 2015-2018) source
- IATSE claims set-up/dismantle of exhibits, furniture, pipe and drape, sign hanging and floor coverings; exhibitors may use full-time staff to help with parts of display erection source
- Dock-to-booth delivery is the official contractor's job; hand-carry allowed without carts or dollies source
Drayage (moving your freight to the booth)
- Phoenix Travel & Adventure Show 2024 (Expo Event Services): everything coming through the loading dock is weighed and charged a material handling fee source
Shipping deadlines
- Phoenix Convention Center facility guide (2017): the center has no storage space and will not accept goods shipped to the venue for exhibitors - ship via the contractor source
Electrical and utilities
- WMS 2023 at Phoenix Convention Center: Commonwealth Electric listed as the exclusive in-house electrical distribution contractor source
