Eastern States Exposition Exhibitor Guide
Outside its September fair, the Big E grounds host more than 100 consumer and trade shows a year in fairground buildings: no ballrooms, no docks to book, and on many shows you drive into the hall to unload. The biggest trade event, the MTEast manufacturing show, fills all of the more than 355,000 sq ft of exhibit space, and the venue manual decides who wires, lifts and builds.
- 3,000+ exhibitors served
- 10,000+ booths built
- 2 days to a design brief

Quick answers
What exhibitors ask about the Eastern States Exposition
The 2026 Home & Garden Show kit lets vehicles into the buildings for unloading only, then out to park. Your show manager controls vehicle access.
Massachusetts is not a right-to-work state. The venue itself bills its own electrical, plumbing, carpentry and forklift staff, at a four-hour minimum. Booth setup rules come from each show and its decorator.
The venue manual says electrical wiring must be done by the grounds electrician, and electrical hookups are billed through the show.
Buildings & exhibit halls
Eastern States Exposition floor plan: the Better Living Center, Young Building and Mallary Complex
Trade shows here use the fair's exhibition buildings. The three below are the ones big shows combine; the venue says its buildings run from 28,000 to 129,400 sq ft and top 355,000 sq ft together. Tap a building for its doors and booth count.
Schematic. Widths are proportional to floor area; the buildings are separate structures on the grounds, not one hall. Spec sheets are on easternstatesexposition.com.
Better Living Center
- 123,000 sq ft, air-conditioned
- 500 booths
- 3 freight doors · 6 public entries

The Mallary Complex (129,400 sq ft, 500 booths) is the livestock building during the fair and can be subdivided. MTEast, Equine Affaire and the RV show use it with the other buildings.
Mallary Complex, West
- 54,000 sq ft
- 6 public entries for the complex
- 110/115/220V and water

The arena section of the Mallary Complex. The venue says the complex can be subdivided to suit an event.

Eastern States Exposition venue manual: can my team do this at the Big E?
Since January 1, 2025, every event at the Big E has to follow the venue's Event Manual, reviewed at least 30 days before move-in. It was written for a fairground that hosts horse shows, dog shows and trade shows on the same grounds, so some rules surprise booth crews. Each row follows that manual, except where a show kit is named.
| Task | Allowed? |
|---|---|
| Drive your vehicle into the building to unload | On many shows, yes: the 2026 Home & Garden Show allowed it for unloading only, then the vehicle must leave. Show management controls access |
| Wire your own booth lighting into building power | No. Electrical wiring is done by the venue's grounds electrician, and hookups are billed through the show |
| Run a forklift yourself | No. Use the venue's forklift operator or the show decorator; power equipment must be run by a licensed operator |
| Tape down carpet edges or hang signs with tape | No tape of any kind for marking floors or hanging signs, and no spray paint or aerosol chalk |
| Use fabric backdrops | Yes, if flame-retardant. Burlap and bark mulch are not allowed as display material |
| Show a vehicle in the booth | Yes, with the battery unhooked and the tank half full or less |
| Hand out stickers or put signs on the grounds | No stickers anywhere on the grounds. Outdoor signs and all sponsor signs need the venue's approval |
| Serve food or drink samples | Only through the venue's contracted caterer, with a ServSafe-certified monitor |
| Bring a space heater or portable AC unit | No heating or air-conditioner units |
| Camp on site in a motorhome during the show | Yes, from two days before the show, at $40 per night for trade shows |

Insider tips
Eastern States Exposition exhibitor tips: what experienced teams do
Ask which building, then which door
A Big E show can spread across the Better Living Center, Young Building and Mallary Complex, with 3, 7 and 10 freight doors. Your door decides where the truck goes, so get it with your booth number.
Pack magnets and clips, not tape
The venue manual bans tape of any kind for marking floors or hanging signs. Plan carpet that lies flat without tape and graphics that hang from your own frame.
Book the electrician early
Only the grounds electrician wires booths, and venue staff are billed with a four-hour minimum. Group your power drops into one order instead of calling for small jobs on site.
Bring flame-retardant fabric, no burlap
All backdrop and display fabric must be flame-retardant, and burlap, bark mulch, feed and bedding are banned as display material. Carry the certificates for your fabrics.
Long trucks go first
The 2026 Home & Garden Show limited access through Door 7 of the Better Living Center from its second move-in day and asked boom trucks and long-wheelbase vehicles to deliver early that morning. Schedule a long truck for the first hours of move-in.
Stay out of September
The Big E fair takes over the grounds every September and brings more than a million visitors. Trade shows run the rest of the year; plan a West Springfield show and its hotel rooms outside fair season.
Move-in & freight
Eastern States Exposition loading and freight: freight doors, not a dock
Get directions to Eastern States Exposition →
- Freight doors into each buildingThe Better Living Center has 3 freight doors, the Young Building 7 plus a loading dock, the Mallary Complex 10 and the Coliseum 3. Ask your show which door is assigned to your booth.
- Drive in, unload, drive outOn the 2026 Home & Garden Show, vehicles came into the buildings for unloading only and then parked outside. Access through Door 7 of the Better Living Center was limited from the second move-in day, so boom trucks and long-wheelbase vehicles were asked to deliver early that morning.
- Drayage through the decoratorFreight shipped to the official decorator's warehouse is delivered on the first move-in day. For the 2026 Home Show, that was Demers Events & Expo Services of East Hartford, Conn.
- Forklifts on requestThe decorator rents forklifts at your cost; if its machine is too small, the venue's own forklift can be booked, though not for every hour of setup.
- Gate 9 and Memorial AvenueFrom I-91 or the Mass Pike (Exit 45), Route 5 to Route 147 West brings you to Memorial Avenue. The venue has about 9,000 parking spaces, and trailers park in Lot 9.
- Day −60Design approved. Confirm your building, booth number and freight door with show management.
- Day −30Electrical order in; the grounds electrician does all wiring. Show producers file layouts and attend the venue's production meeting.
- Day −21Purple ships to West Springfield through our carrier network, to the decorator's warehouse or direct to the show.
- Day −7Forklift and labor orders confirmed with the decorator. Check fabrics are flame-retardant.
- Day 0Drive in through your assigned freight door, unload, move the vehicle out, then build.
- Show closeVehicles wait outside until show management clears the building of attendees.
Labor & building rules
Eastern States Exposition labor rules: what your team can do itself
Massachusetts has no right-to-work law, but the Big E is a fairground, not a union convention hall. The venue supplies its own staff for building services, and each show's decorator handles the rest. We found no published 2027 MTEast exhibitor manual, so the rules below come from the venue manual and the 2026 Home & Garden Show kit. Check your own show kit for booth-labor rules.
✓Your own staff
- Unload your own vehicle inside the building on shows that allow drive-in access
- Set up your own booth on shows like the Home & Garden Show, where exhibitors build their own displays during set hours
- Use fabric, carpet and display materials that meet the flame-retardant rules
- Camp on site in your own motorhome during the show
●Venue staff, billed to the show
- All electrical wiring and hookups: the grounds electrician
- Plumbing and gas work
- Carpentry work
- Forklift operator
- Audio-visual services and digital signage
- Security and door guards
- All billed at current rates with a four-hour minimum per person
!Watch for
- No tape on floors or for signs, no spray paint or aerosol chalk
- No burlap backdrops, bark mulch, feed or bedding in displays
- Nothing attached to the sprinkler system
- No open flame, propane or flammable decorations without fire department approval
- Food and drink only through the venue's caterer
- CBD products are banned on the grounds during all events

The grounds
From a 1916 agricultural fair to a year-round show ground
Joshua L. Brooks started the Eastern States Exposition to promote New England farming. A century later the same buildings host machine-tool demonstrations, RV dealers and model railroads.

- 1916The first Eastern States Agricultural and Industrial Exposition is held in West Springfield in October.
- 1916The Eastern States Coliseum opens on October 12. It later hosts pro hockey, including the Springfield Indians; the ice plant was dismantled in 1991 and the floor is dirt today.
- 1924The Industrial Arts Building goes up. Two years later, Storrowton Village begins with the idea of moving the fair's handicraft exhibit into a real building.
- 1961The Industrial Arts Building is renamed the Better Living Center, the place to see new products. At 123,000 sq ft it is still the largest building on the grounds.
- 2024The Big E fair draws 1,633,935 visitors.
- 2025The venue's Event Manual becomes mandatory for every event, and MTEast fills the grounds on May 13–15.
FAQ
Eastern States Exposition FAQ for exhibitors
Does the Eastern States Exposition host trade shows?
Yes. Besides The Big E fair each September, the venue lists more than 100 consumer and trade shows a year. The largest trade event is MTEast (the Manufacturing Technology Series EAST, formerly EASTEC), produced by SME, which uses all available space on the grounds. Equine Affaire, the Railroad Hobby Show, the RV show and the Home & Garden Show are large expos too.
Is the Big E union?
Massachusetts is not a right-to-work state, but the venue does not publish union jurisdiction rules for booth setup. Its own staff handle electrical, plumbing, carpentry and forklift work, billed to the show at a four-hour minimum. Booth labor rules come from your show kit and its decorator.
Can I set up my own booth?
On many shows, yes. The 2026 Home & Garden Show kit, for example, has exhibitors drive in, unload and build their own displays during set hours. Electrical wiring is always done by the venue's grounds electrician, and forklift work by the venue or the show decorator.
Is there a loading dock?
Most buildings use freight doors instead of a dock: 3 at the Better Living Center, 10 at the Mallary Complex and 3 at the Coliseum. The Young Building has 7 freight doors and a loading dock. On many shows vehicles drive into the building to unload.
How much is drayage at the Eastern States Exposition?
Plan about $125 per hundredweight as a planning estimate. The show's decorator sets the actual rate in its kit, and many exhibitors skip drayage by driving their booth in.
How big is the Better Living Center?
123,000 sq ft of air-conditioned exhibit space with room for 500 booths, a concrete floor rated for unlimited lbs per sq ft, 110/115/220V power, water and gas, and 3 freight doors. Covered walkways connect it to the 55,000 sq ft Young Building.
What is the ceiling height?
The venue's building spec sheets do not list clear heights. Ask your show manager for the clearance in your building before planning tall structures or hanging signs.
Where do I park a truck or trailer?
The venue has about 9,000 parking spaces, and all trailers must park in Lot 9. Motorhomes and campers can move onto the grounds up to two days before a show, at $40 per night for trade shows.
Can I give out food samples?
Only through the venue's contracted caterer. The venue keeps all food, beverage and catering rights and requires a ServSafe-certified person to monitor food service.
Exhibiting at the Big E?
Tell us your building and your freight door.
Send your show, building and booth number, and whether your team will drive in or ship through the decorator. Within two business days you get a design that hangs without tape, one consolidated electrical order for the grounds electrician and a drayage estimate if you ship.
