Albany's shows are about access. Associations hold their legislative conferences here because members can walk to the Capitol between sessions; state agencies, healthcare systems and public-sector suppliers exhibit because the buyers are already in town. The Capital Center is compact and modern, and it connects indoors to the Plaza's convention hall and the arena, so a mid-size show can spread across the complex without anyone putting on a coat.

The building
The building and the Capital Complex
The Capital Center is a four-level glass building on Eagle Street with the exhibit hall on the main level and meeting rooms above. Enclosed walkways connect it to the Empire State Plaza convention hall, the Egg performing arts center and MVP Arena, marketed together as the Capital Complex.

History
The Plaza and the Egg
Albany has hosted New York's government since 1797 and its conventions almost as long. The modern complex dates from a governor who wanted the capital to look like one.
The New York State Capitol takes thirty-two years and five architects, including H. H. Richardson, to build, and is still unfinished when Governor Theodore Roosevelt declares it complete in 1899.
Governor Nelson Rockefeller clears 98 acres of downtown for the Empire State Plaza: the Corning Tower, four agency buildings, a reflecting pool, a convention hall beneath the platform and the Egg, the performing arts center that opened in 1978.
The Knickerbocker Arena, now MVP Arena, opens on South Pearl Street and gives downtown its consumer-show floor.
The Albany Capital Center opens in March, built by the Albany Convention Center Authority for about $78 million, and is connected by enclosed walkways to the Plaza and the arena, creating the Capital Complex.
The complex hosts the state's association conferences, legislative days, healthcare and education meetings and the consumer shows that fill the arena, three blocks from the Capitol.

Exhibit labor follows the show contractor; exhibitors may typically set up their own booths within show limits; the show kit sets the exact allowance. Purple crews build directly.
Among the lowest in the Northeast
Plan about $85 per hundredweight where a contractor handles freight; many association shows use hand-carry and self-unloading.
Downtown dock, narrow streets
Trucks reach the dock from Eagle Street and the side streets; 53-foot trailers need a plan. Purple sends a straight truck.
Albany Fire Department
Flame certificates for fabrics, covered booths by approval, no open flame, and permits for vehicles.
Venue services
Electrical, internet, audiovisual, cleaning and catering through the venue or its providers; the show kit carries the current list.
Legislative calendar
January to June is session; hotels and restaurants fill on session days and the Capitol's own events close streets. Book blocks early for spring shows.
Two operators
The Plaza convention hall is run by the state's Office of General Services, not the Capital Center. Shows that span both file paperwork twice.

Logistics
Getting there and staying
- By car: Interstate 787 to downtown exits; 2.5 hours from Midtown, 90 minutes from Fishkill, 3 hours from Boston.
- By train: Amtrak to Albany–Rensselaer, across the river; a ten-minute cab. Empire Service from Penn Station is about 2.5 hours.
- Airport: Albany International is 20 minutes.
- Freight: dock on the Eagle Street side; windows scheduled through the venue.
- Walkways: the Capital Center, the Plaza, the Egg, MVP Arena and the Renaissance hotel connect indoors.
