Boston convention centers and trade show venues

Boston exhibiting happens in two neighborhoods. In the South Boston Seaport, the BCEC, renamed the Thomas M. Menino Convention & Exhibition Center in 2025, has 516,000 contiguous sq ft about three miles from Logan, with the Westin joined by skybridge. In Back Bay, the Hynes Convention Center connects indoors to the Sheraton Boston and the Boston Marriott Copley Place. It is a union city with high drayage, yet the MCCA's rules let your full-time staff build the booth.

Boston convention centers and trade show venues

Boston's trade shows sit in two neighborhoods: the Seaport, where the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (now the Menino Center) and the Westin connect by skybridge, and Back Bay, where the Hynes Convention Center and the Sheraton connect indoors. Boston is a union city and drayage here runs high, so this page compares the four guides we have before you crate.

The calendar

Shows at Boston venues, 2026–2027

The dated shows below come from our BCEC guide, checked against the Signature Boston event calendar and each organizer in October 2026. They run from engineering and automation in November through dentistry, boats and seafood in winter to PAX East in April. Our Back Bay guides do not list dated shows, but the BCEC guide notes two current events at the Hynes.

Every Boston trade show for 2027, with booth options: see our Boston show pages →

Dates are copied from each venue guide's calendar (organizer and venue sites, checked October 2026); only shows ending on or after October 29, 2026 are listed. Confirm dates, halls and the general contractor with each organizer. More notes on other recurring shows are in the BCEC guide.

Busy seasons

When Boston is busiest for trade shows

Counting the dated shows above by the month they open, November 2026 is the busiest month in our listings, with 2 shows starting, ahead of January 2027 with 1. Plan freight and hotel rooms early for those weeks.

November is busy in the Seaport. The Society of Women Engineers brings its WE26 conference and career fair to the BCEC early in the month, with a planning figure of about 15,000, and the Rockwell Automation Fair follows in mid-November. Across town, the Signature Boston calendar puts Advanced Therapies USA at the Hynes Convention Center in early November 2026, and the MRS Fall Meeting is also a Hynes event, not a BCEC one.

Winter at the BCEC mixes consumer and professional shows. The Boston RV and Camping Expo opens 2027 in mid-January, the Yankee Dental Congress of the Massachusetts Dental Society follows at the end of January, and the New England Boat Show fills the halls in February. A winter show here means freight, crews and attendees all arriving in Boston weather, which is one reason the Westin's skybridge matters.

Spring is the BCEC's peak. Seafood Expo North America, a trade-only seafood and processing show, runs in early March 2027, followed by the National Science Teachers Association convention and the New England Restaurant and Bar Show later that month. The AOTA conference comes in April, and PAX East, the gaming and pop-culture convention that moved here in 2010 and draws more than 100,000, closes the season in late April.

Planning guide

Exhibiting in Boston: what to plan for

Teamsters and electricians hold the BCEC jurisdictions, but the MCCA's guidelines let bona fide full-time employees build their own booth with power tools; check each show kit, which can be stricter. The sections below pull together what our 4 Boston venue guides say about labor, freight, move-in, travel and hotels, venue by venue, with a link to the guide each fact comes from.

Labor & union rules

Boston union labor and booth setup rules by venue

Massachusetts is not a right-to-work state, and Boston has a reputation as a strict union town. At the BCEC the center has jurisdictional agreements with the Teamsters and the IBEW electricians, and forklifts belong to the general contractor's union crew. But the MCCA's exhibitor guidelines give your own bona fide full-time employees more room than most expect: they may unpack, assemble, dismantle and pack the booth with power tools. Display-house crews may only supervise unless they belong to the right local. Show kits can be stricter, and they govern.

Boston drayage rates and show budget estimator

Boston is among the most expensive drayage markets in the country. Our BCEC planning figure is about $324 per hundredweight, taken from the crated advance-warehouse line in one published 2026 kit for the building; that same kit listed $360.23 crated direct to show site and a 200 lb minimum. Our older Back Bay and Westin guides plan about $185 to $190. All of these are planning numbers, not published tariffs for your show. Your kit has the rate.

How these planning numbers work

  • Shipping weight, drayage and labor assumptions load with the estimator.

All drayage numbers are Purple planning estimates per hundredweight (100 lbs), not quotes or published tariffs. The general contractor for your show publishes the actual material-handling rates in the exhibitor kit. See all venues on the drayage rates page.

Freight

Shipping and advance warehouse basics for Boston shows

At the BCEC, everything moves through the dock. Exhibitors check in at the general contractor's marshaling lot, badge in with a government photo ID, and bring freight in through 62 covered bays. Passenger elevators are off limits for freight. With drayage this high, the biggest savings come from shipping less weight, crating it, and using the self-unload rights the MCCA gives your own staff.

  • Unload your own truckAt the BCEC your staff may unload a company-owned or rented truck, or an employee's car, van or truck, if it is under 24 ft, using your own two-wheel hand trucks and four-wheel flat trucks. Our guide notes this can save thousands at Boston rates.

  • One item, one timeHand-carry through the BCEC front doors is one item, one time, carried by one person with no dolly. The rule is enforced on the Westin skybridge too. Everything else goes through the loading dock.

  • Warehouse versus directIn the one 2026 BCEC kit our guide cites, crated freight cost about $324 per hundredweight through the advance warehouse and $360.23 crated direct to the show site. Check both lines in your own kit before you choose a route.

  • Boston flame certificates onlyThe Boston Fire Department does not accept flame certificates from other cities, and they must be dated within six months of the show. Send fabric samples ahead for testing if your certificates came from another jurisdiction.

  • Two buildings, one showThe Westin connects to the BCEC and the Sheraton connects to the Hynes, and both hotels take overflow for the convention center next door. If your show spans the hotel and the hall, confirm freight routing for each building.

Move-in & move-out

Loading docks, move-in traffic and dock tips in Boston

The BCEC has the most detailed dock picture of any Boston venue in our guides: 62 covered bays, five drive-on doors and a separate freight road. Our older Back Bay and Westin guides give less, mostly that freight routing needs confirming when a show uses both a hotel and the hall it connects to.

BCEC

62 bays and five elephant doors

The covered bays are spread evenly to serve each hall, with five drive-on elephant doors, 14 dock levelers, a separate freight access road and a 45 ft wide indoor pre-fab area. Check in at the marshaling lot trailer, then badge in at Southwest Badging.

From our Boston Convention & Exhibition Center guide

Westin Seaport

Skybridge is not a freight route

The Westin's skybridge reaches the BCEC on Level Two, but the center's one-item hand-carry rule is enforced there too. Our Westin guide says to confirm freight routing if your show spans both buildings, and its event rooms are carpeted.

From our Westin Boston Seaport District guide

Sheraton Boston

Hynes overflow on carpet

The Sheraton's 70,000+ sq ft of event space connects indoors to the Hynes and serves as its overflow. Our guide lists the rooms as carpeted, so confirm floor protection, and confirm freight routing if your show uses both buildings.

Choosing a venue

Which Boston venue is right for my show?

Short answers drawn from our venue guides. Your show's organizer picks the venue; these help you plan the booth for it.

A large show with tall builds

The BCEC, renamed the Thomas M. Menino Convention & Exhibition Center in July 2025, has 516,000 contiguous sq ft in Halls A to C, 35 ft clear at the low points and up to 100 ft in Hall A, with 62 covered dock bays and five drive-on doors. Two costs bite: drayage in the 2026 kit is about $324 per hundredweight crated, and a big canopy needs a sprinkler, not a fire watch.

A mid-size national show in Back Bay

The Hynes Convention Center has 176,480 sq ft of exhibit space with a Green Line stop at the building, and the Sheraton Boston and Boston Marriott Copley Place both connect to it indoors. The Sheraton adds more than 70,000 sq ft of its own event space, renovated in 2014, with a direct connection to the Prudential Center as well.

Hotel space connected to the BCEC

The Westin Boston Seaport District was built in 2006 around a skybridge into the BCEC, so attendees move between hotel and show floor without going outside. It has 793 rooms and more than 95,000 sq ft of meeting space in 45 event rooms, and Logan Airport is about seven minutes away.

Who may build the booth?

Massachusetts is not right-to-work. At the BCEC, the MCCA's exhibitor guidelines let bona fide full-time employees unpack, assemble and dismantle the booth with power tools, though some kits are stricter. The MCCA's exhibitor participation rules for the Hynes say the same: full-time employees may set up and dismantle their own booths with hand-operated power tools, though fork trucks and pallet jacks are off limits. At the Sheraton and the Westin, confirm with the show's decorator.

FAQ

Boston trade show FAQ for exhibitors

Answers from our Boston venue guides. Each answer links the guide it comes from.

What are the convention centers in Boston?

Boston has two convention centers in our guides, both run by the MCCA. The BCEC, now formally the Thomas M. Menino Convention & Exhibition Center, sits on the South Boston waterfront with 516,000 contiguous sq ft. The Hynes Convention Center in Back Bay has 176,480 sq ft. Two connected hotels also host shows: the Westin Boston Seaport District beside the BCEC and the Sheraton Boston beside the Hynes.

From our Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, Hynes Convention Center, Westin Boston Seaport District and Sheraton Boston Hotel guides

What is the biggest convention center in Boston?

The BCEC. Its single exhibit level has 516,000 contiguous, nearly column-free sq ft in Hall A (170,000), Hall B (184,000, divisible into two 92,000 sq ft halls) and Hall C (162,000), in a 2.1 million sq ft building on about 60 acres. Ceilings are 35 ft at the low points, rising to 100 ft in Hall A. It was renamed for Mayor Thomas M. Menino in July 2025; show kits now say MCEC.

From our Boston Convention & Exhibition Center guide

Is Boston a union city for trade shows?

Yes. Massachusetts is not a right-to-work state. At the BCEC the center has jurisdictional agreements with the Teamsters and the IBEW electricians for move-in, installation, dismantle and move-out, and forklifts are run by the general contractor's union crew. Our Westin and Sheraton guides say Boston's union jurisdiction applies there too, with terms that vary by show, so confirm with the decorator.

From our Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, Westin Boston Seaport District and Sheraton Boston Hotel guides

Can I set up my own booth at a Boston trade show?

At the BCEC, yes, with your own bona fide full-time employees. The MCCA's guidelines let them unpack, assemble, dismantle and pack the booth with power tools. Outside display-house crews may only supervise unless they belong to the appropriate local. One 2026 kit at the building was stricter, so read yours. The MCCA's Hynes rules also let full-time employees set up and dismantle their own booth.

From our Boston Convention & Exhibition Center and Hynes Convention Center guides

How much does drayage cost in Boston?

Our BCEC planning figure is about $324 per hundredweight, the crated advance-warehouse rate in one published 2026 kit for the building, which also listed $360.23 crated direct, a 200 lb minimum and $52.50 for small packages up to 30 lbs. Our older guides plan about $190 at the Hynes and $185 at the Westin and Sheraton. These are planning numbers, not your show's tariff.

From our Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, Hynes Convention Center, Westin Boston Seaport District and Sheraton Boston Hotel guides

Should I ship to the advance warehouse or direct to the BCEC?

In the 2026 kit our guide cites, the warehouse was cheaper: about $324 per hundredweight crated, against $360.23 crated direct to the show site. Direct freight comes in through the dock after check-in at the general contractor's marshaling lot. Big covered or multilevel builds also need plans in about 90 days before move-in, so lock the design early either way. Your kit sets the rates and deadlines.

From our Boston Convention & Exhibition Center guide

When are the big Boston trade shows in 2026 and 2027?

At the BCEC, the Society of Women Engineers conference and the Rockwell Automation Fair come in November 2026. Yankee Dental Congress and the New England Boat Show follow in January and February 2027, Seafood Expo North America in early March, and PAX East, the building's biggest show at more than 100,000, in late April. The Hynes hosts Advanced Therapies USA in early November 2026.

From our Boston Convention & Exhibition Center and Hynes Convention Center guides

Which hotels are connected to Boston's convention centers?

The Westin Boston Seaport District connects to the BCEC by a skybridge on Level Two, and the 1,055-room Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport is across Summer Street. In Back Bay, the Sheraton Boston and the Boston Marriott Copley Place both connect indoors to the Hynes, and the Sheraton also links to the Prudential Center.

From our Westin Boston Seaport District, Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, Sheraton Boston Hotel and Hynes Convention Center guides

How far is Logan Airport from the Boston convention centers?

Logan International is about three miles from the BCEC, a short run through the harbor tunnels, though our guide says to allow more at rush hour. The MBTA Silver Line SL1 runs from the terminals to World Trade Center station, about a block from the building. The Westin is about seven minutes by car, and the Hynes and Sheraton in Back Bay about 15 to 20 minutes.

From our Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, Westin Boston Seaport District, Hynes Convention Center and Sheraton Boston Hotel guides

Which Boston venue suits a smaller expo or hotel show?

The Hynes Convention Center's 176,480 sq ft suits mid-size national trade shows and association conventions, with the Green Line at the door. Hall B at the BCEC can also split into two 92,000 sq ft halls. For a hotel show, the Westin has more than 95,000 sq ft in 45 event rooms and the Sheraton more than 70,000 sq ft, both carpeted, so confirm floor protection.

From our Hynes Convention Center, Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, Westin Boston Seaport District and Sheraton Boston Hotel guides

What should I know about parking and move-in at the BCEC?

Staff unloading at the dock get 20 minutes with a dock parking pass on the dashboard, or risk a tow. The South Parking Lot has 1,345 spaces plus 200 valet, with no overnight or 24-hour parking; for big shows, nearly 10,000 spaces in nearby garages can be blocked. No one under 18 is allowed on the docks or in the halls during move-in and move-out.

From our Boston Convention & Exhibition Center guide

Do covered or double-deck booths need a sprinkler in Boston?

At the BCEC, yes. The lowest level of any multilevel exhibit, and any single-story covered area over 300 sq ft, needs a temporary sprinkler from an MCCA-approved licensed company, and Massachusetts does not accept a fire watch instead. Our guide notes that open mesh with 70 percent openings, fusible-seam fabric or open-grate ceilings can avoid it. Plans are due at least 90 days before move-in.
