Chicago convention centers and trade show venues

Chicago exhibiting starts with McCormick Place: four buildings and about 2.6 million sq ft on the lakefront, where your own full-time staff may build a booth of any size but freight is still Teamster work. Around it sit three big downtown hotels with real exhibit space, Festival Hall out on Navy Pier, and two suburban centers near O'Hare in Rosemont and Schaumburg that trade downtown traffic for parking and lower drayage planning rates.

Chicago convention centers and trade show venues

Chicago's shows run in three places: McCormick Place on the lakefront, a handful of downtown venues between the South Loop and Navy Pier, and the suburbs near O'Hare, where Rosemont and Schaumburg trade downtown traffic for parking and lower drayage. Illinois has no right-to-work law, so who builds your booth depends on the venue and the show kit. These are the seven guides we have.

The calendar

Shows at Chicago venues, 2026–2027

The calendar below pulls the dated shows from our McCormick Place and Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk guides. At McCormick Place the season runs from radiology at the turn of December through cars in February, housewares, health IT and material handling in spring, and foodservice in May; the Sheraton adds oral surgery, retail buying sessions, adolescent health and archives. Our other hotel, Navy Pier and suburban guides list the kinds of events they host rather than dated shows, so check those with each organizer.

Busy seasons

When Chicago is busiest for trade shows

Counting the dated shows above by the month they open, February 2027 is the busiest month in our listings, with 3 shows starting, ahead of March 2027 with 3. Plan freight and hotel rooms early for those weeks.

Winter is big-show season on the lakefront. The RSNA Annual Meeting fills the North and South halls at McCormick Place at the end of November and into December, and the Chicago Auto Show, in its 119th edition, takes the campus in February 2027. Our McCormick guide notes that several of the largest shows run November through March, so plan for Chicago weather and ship a day early. Rosemont's guide lists the Chicago RV and Boat Show as a winter event. Downtown, the AAOMS Dental Implant Conference fills the Sheraton's Riverwalk hall in early December 2026.

Spring is the trade-heavy stretch at McCormick Place. The Inspired Home Show, a trade-only housewares event, comes in March 2027, HIMSS27 brings health IT in early April, and ProMat, now three days instead of four, follows later in April. The National Restaurant Association Show closes the season in late May 2027, with a planning range of about 50,000 to 60,000. Downtown, the Hilton and Hyatt Regency guides describe association conferences in spring and fall.

IMTS and PACK EXPO International have already run this season, in September and October 2026, and both return in even-numbered years, so the next fall at McCormick Place will look lighter on machinery. Away from the campus, Navy Pier's Festival Hall is known for art and garden shows, and the Rosemont calendar leans on fan conventions and collector shows. The Society of American Archivists brings its ARCHIVES*RECORDS expo to the Sheraton's Riverwalk hall in late August 2027. Confirm every date with the organizer before you book freight.

Planning guide

Exhibiting in Chicago: what to plan for

McCormick Place has written exhibitor rights for your own full-time staff; at the hotels, Navy Pier and the suburban centers, exhibit labor runs through the show's contractor and the show kit sets what you may do. The sections below pull together what our 7 Chicago venue guides say about labor, freight, move-in, travel and hotels, venue by venue, with a link to the guide each fact comes from.

Labor & union rules

Chicago union labor and booth setup rules by venue

Illinois has no right-to-work law, but Chicago is not one labor story. McCormick Place has some of the broadest exhibitor rights in the country: since the 2010 reforms, full-time employees of at least six months may build a booth of any size with their own tools and ladders. Freight from the truck to the booth did not change and stays Teamster work. At the Hilton, the Hyatt Regency, Navy Pier, Rosemont and Schaumburg, our guides say exhibit labor runs through the show's contractor and the show kit sets any self-install allowance. The Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk's 2024 kits were narrower still: your staff could set only pop-ups in booths of 10 × 10 or less.

Chicago drayage rates and show budget estimator

Drayage is where Chicago still costs the most. Our McCormick Place figure is about $210 per hundredweight with a 200 lb minimum, lower than before the reforms but still near the top nationally. The Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk plans higher still, at about $225; a 2024 kit there charged $269 to the warehouse. The other guides step down with distance from the lakefront, from about $175 at the Hilton to about $120 in Schaumburg. Every figure here is a Purple planning rate, not a published tariff; your show kit carries the actual rate and its surcharges.

How these planning numbers work

  • Shipping weight, drayage and labor assumptions load with the estimator.

All drayage numbers are Purple planning estimates per hundredweight (100 lbs), not quotes or published tariffs. The general contractor for your show publishes the actual material-handling rates in the exhibitor kit. See all venues on the drayage rates page.

Freight

Shipping and advance warehouse basics for Chicago shows

Chicago freight runs on the show kit's advance warehouse and targeted move-in. At McCormick Place the advance warehouse typically opens about 30 days out and closes about a week before the show, and late or off-target freight pays a surcharge. The downtown hotels add a second test: whether the crate fits the elevator. The suburban centers are simpler, with docks reached straight off the expressways.

  • Label the building, not the campusMcCormick Place docks are building-specific and carriers are routed by building. Write building, hall and booth number on every bill of lading, because freight for Hall F in the West Building goes nowhere near Hall D at Lakeside.

    From our McCormick Place guide

  • Beat the warehouse deadlineIn our McCormick freight countdown the advance warehouse deadline falls about seven days before move-in, and late freight pays the surcharge. The Hilton and Hyatt Regency countdowns put the deadline about five days out. Your kit sets the real dates.

From our McCormick Place, Hilton Chicago and Hyatt Regency Chicago guides

  • Ship early for winter showsSeveral of McCormick Place's largest shows run November through March. Our guide advises shipping a day early for Chicago weather, so a snow delay does not push you past the warehouse deadline.

  • Crate to the elevator carThe Hilton Chicago opened in 1927 and its service elevators have real dimensional limits. Get the car depth, width, door height and capacity from the show kit and check your largest crate before you build anything large.

  • Measure for the Sheraton's river-level hallAt the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, the roll-up doors into the hall are 11 × 20 ft 6 in and the street-level freight elevator 11 × 10 ft 6 in. Split long wall sections and tall crates before they ship, and send packages through the hotel's FedEx Office, not the front desk.

  • Cut weight at McCormickOur McCormick guide lists the ways to keep drayage down: aluminum frame systems instead of wood, one consolidated shipment, everything crated, and the advance warehouse on time. Labor saved under the exhibitor rights can offset some of it.

  • Suburban docks, no Loop trafficRosemont's docks open off River Road, reached from the Kennedy and Tri-State expressways, and Schaumburg's docks are reached from I-90 and Illinois Route 53. Neither guide has downtown congestion to route trucks around.

Move-in & move-out

Loading docks, move-in traffic and dock tips in Chicago

Move-in in Chicago depends on where the dock is. McCormick Place has a separate dock and marshaling plan for each building. The downtown hotels move freight by service elevator, and the Sheraton's hall takes it through river-level roll-up doors. Navy Pier has one road in. Rosemont and Schaumburg have the easiest truck access in our set, which is a large part of why regional shows choose them.

McCormick Place

Building docks and the West apron

Each building has its own docks and marshaling plan. The 2007 West Building added a 36-berth dock and a 100,000 sq ft truck apron serving Hall F. Cars and small utility vehicles unload at designated docks under the ASUV program, registered in advance.

Getting there

Getting to Chicago's convention venues

Chicago has two airports and the choice depends on the venue. Midway is the closer airport for McCormick Place and the downtown hotels. O'Hare is about 10 minutes from Rosemont and about 20 from Schaumburg, but 30 to 45 minutes from downtown depending on traffic. Transit is strong downtown: Metra and the CTA reach every lakefront venue.

Choosing a venue

Which Chicago venue is right for my show?

Short answers drawn from our venue guides. Your show's organizer picks the venue; these help you plan the booth for it.

A large show that needs a convention center

McCormick Place is four buildings and 2.6 million sq ft of exhibit halls on the lakefront; Hall A in the South Building alone is 840,000 sq ft, and nearly 3,000 hotel rooms connect to the campus. Since the 2010 reforms your full-time staff of six months or more may build a booth of any size with their own tools and ladders, but freight is still Teamster work, planned at about $210 per hundredweight.

A conference expo in a downtown hotel

The Hyatt Regency Chicago has a 70,000 sq ft expo hall built for trade shows, which takes heavier builds and forklifts by arrangement, about 15 minutes by car from McCormick Place. The Hilton Chicago's 119,000 sq ft Stevens Meeting Center takes exhibit halls of 80 to 180 booths, but its service elevators date to 1927, so every crate must fit the car: use the fit checker in the guide before you build.

Tall builds, and a show the public walks past

Navy Pier's Festival Hall has 113,000 sq ft in Hall A and 57,000 in Hall B, both with 60 ft ceilings, and the pier draws over nine million visitors a year. Freight has one way in: Grand Avenue is the only vehicle route onto the pier, to an eight-truck dock at Festival Hall, and summer weekend crowds slow truck access.

Near O'Hare, away from downtown traffic

The Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont has 840,000 sq ft about 10 minutes from O'Hare, a skybridge-connected garage and the CTA Blue Line nearby; our guide plans drayage at about $140 per hundredweight. The Schaumburg Convention Center is smaller, 148,624 sq ft, connected to the 500-room Renaissance Schaumburg, with free surface parking and the lowest planning rate in our Chicago set, about $120.

Who may build the booth?

Illinois has no right-to-work law. At the Hilton, the Hyatt Regency, Navy Pier, Rosemont and Schaumburg our guides say exhibit labor runs through the show's contractor, with self-install limits set by the show kit. McCormick Place is the exception with written exhibitor rights: full-time staff build at any size, but never with forklifts or lifts, and those rights cannot pass to a contractor.

FAQ

Chicago trade show FAQ for exhibitors

Answers from our Chicago venue guides. Each answer links the guide it comes from.

What are the main convention centers in Chicago?

Our guides cover seven Chicago-area venues. McCormick Place is the lakefront campus south of the Loop. Downtown, the Hilton Chicago, the Hyatt Regency Chicago and the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk are convention hotels with real exhibit space, and Festival Hall sits on Navy Pier. Near O'Hare, the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center is in Rosemont and the Schaumburg Convention Center is farther northwest. The suburban two trade downtown traffic for easy parking and lower drayage planning rates.

From our McCormick Place, Hilton Chicago, Hyatt Regency Chicago, Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Navy Pier Festival Hall, Donald E. Stephens Convention Center and Schaumburg Convention Center guides

What is the biggest convention center in Chicago?

McCormick Place, by a wide margin. It has about 2.6 million sq ft of exhibit space in six halls across four connected buildings, and Hall A in the South Building alone is 840,000 sq ft. South and North together offer more than 1.2 million sq ft on one level. The Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont is next in our guides at 840,000 sq ft.

From our McCormick Place and Donald E. Stephens Convention Center guides

Is Chicago a union city for trade shows?

Yes. Illinois has no right-to-work law. At McCormick Place, freight from the dock to the booth is Teamster work billed as drayage, and power distribution stays with electricians. At the Hilton, the Hyatt Regency, Navy Pier, Rosemont and Schaumburg, our guides say exhibit labor runs through the show's contractor, and a 2024 kit at the Sheraton Grand said all exhibit work in the Chicago area must be done by union personnel. What changed in 2010 is what your own staff may do at McCormick Place, not who moves the freight.

Can I set up my own booth at a Chicago trade show?

At McCormick Place, yes, at any booth size, if the work is done by full-time employees who have been with you at least six months. They may use their own ladders, hand tools and power tools, and McCormick Place can ask for a W-2 or payroll record within 24 hours. The rights cannot pass to a contractor or hired temps. At the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, 2024 kits let your staff set only pop-ups in booths of 10 × 10 or less. At the other five venues, our guides say self-install allowances follow the show kit.

How much is drayage in Chicago?

Our planning rates run from about $225 per hundredweight at the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk and $210 at McCormick Place, both with a 200 lb minimum, down to about $175 at the Hilton, $170 at the Hyatt Regency, $150 at Navy Pier, $140 in Rosemont and $120 in Schaumburg. These are Purple planning rates, not published tariffs. Late, off-target, uncrated or special-handling freight adds surcharges, 25 to 35 percent at McCormick Place in our guide. Your show kit has the actual rate.

Should I ship to the advance warehouse or direct to McCormick Place?

Our McCormick countdown has the advance warehouse opening about 30 days before the show and closing about seven days out; late freight pays a surcharge, and off-target direct freight is surcharged too. Direct shipments arrive at your building's dock for targeted move-in, so the building, hall and booth number must be on every label. Our guide recommends one consolidated, crated shipment, on time. The show kit sets the real dates.

When are the big Chicago trade shows in 2026 and 2027?

At McCormick Place, RSNA runs at the end of November into December 2026, the Chicago Auto Show is in February 2027, the Inspired Home Show in March, HIMSS27 and ProMat in April, and the National Restaurant Association Show in late May. Our guide says several of the largest shows run November through March. IMTS and PACK EXPO International already ran in fall 2026 and return in even-numbered years.

Which hotels are connected to McCormick Place?

Two: the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, linked by an enclosed walkway to the West Building, and the Marriott Marquis Chicago, the other on-campus tower, opened in 2017. They have nearly 3,000 rooms between them, so book early for citywide shows. Downtown, the Hilton Chicago is about a 10-minute drive and the Hyatt Regency Chicago about 15. Many teams stay downtown and ride the Busway or Metra.

Should I fly into Midway or O'Hare for a Chicago show?

For McCormick Place and the downtown hotels, Midway is closer: about 20 minutes to McCormick Place and about 15 to the Hilton, and our McCormick guide notes it is often cheaper. O'Hare is 30 to 45 minutes from downtown depending on traffic, with more international routes. For Rosemont, O'Hare is about 10 minutes away, and for Schaumburg about 20.

Which Chicago venue suits a smaller expo or hotel show?

The Hyatt Regency Chicago has a 70,000 sq ft expo hall built for trade shows, with heavier builds and forklifts by arrangement. The Hilton Chicago's 119,000 sq ft Stevens Meeting Center takes exhibit halls of 80 to 180 booths in our guide, but its 1927 service elevators limit crate size. The Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk's 35,000 sq ft hall sits at river level under a 10 ft 6 in ceiling, so check your booth height. Out of town, the Schaumburg Convention Center offers 148,624 sq ft with a connected hotel and free parking.

What should I know about parking and move-in in Chicago?

At Navy Pier, Grand Avenue is the only road onto the pier and summer weekend crowds slow trucks, so plan around them. At McCormick Place, register in advance if you will unload a car under the ASUV program, and bring your own non-motorized dolly. Rosemont has a skybridge-connected garage and Schaumburg has free surface parking, both unlike downtown, where our guides say parking is scarce and expensive.

Can I use a forklift or pallet jack at McCormick Place?

No. Exhibitors and their employees may not use scooters, forklifts, genie lifts, pallet jacks, condors, scaffolding, scissor lifts, motorized dollies or any other motorized or hydraulic equipment there. Plan heavy pieces with the contractor and bring non-motorized, non-hydraulic hand trucks for your own material. At the Hyatt Regency Chicago, our guide says the expo hall takes forklifts by arrangement; confirm with the hotel first.
