Inline or island, never peninsula: a NASS 2027 booth plan for Boston

We build NASS booths around the instrument tray, the implant on a lit plinth and a seat for the surgeon who wants the technique walked through, all inside the society's inline and island rules. At the BCEC, where Carpenters Local 327 handles most substantial assembly, we file your EAC form and insurance certificate.

What makes NASS Annual Meeting different, and how we build for it

NASS is a surgeons' meeting first, and its Technical Exhibition lives inside that clinical rhythm: the 2026 prospectus reports that 86% of attendees spent more than two hours on the floor. The North American Spine Society sells only inline and island space, with no peninsulas or end-caps, and sets booth-selection order by Priority Points earned from booth size and consecutive years. Real tissue work belongs in the Surgical Innovation Lab, startups gather in the Spine Venture Village, sponsored talks run in the Red Theater, and Business Suites lined the perimeter in 2026 for private meetings. Every booth demo outside the lab runs on artificial models.

Orthopedic spine surgeons and neurosurgeons

Instruments they can pick up, the implant system laid out by level and size, and a rep who can walk the technique step by step on a sawbones model.

Physiatrists, pain specialists and advanced practice providers

Non-surgical and interventional options explained in plain clinical terms, the published evidence on a panel, and a short demo that fits between sessions.

Hospital value analysis and practice leaders

Coding, reimbursement and cost data at a seated table; the 2026 Spine Venture Village ran a session on winning over the value analysis committee for exactly this buyer.

Rules that shape your booth

Inline or island, never peninsula

NASS sells booths in 10×10 multiples and permits no end-cap or peninsula booths; islands stay open to all four aisles and top out at 25 feet (2026 rules). We plan your footprint as a straight inline or a true island from the first sketch.

Organizer rule

Tissue only in the lab

No procedure on human or animal tissue is allowed on the exhibit floor outside the Surgical Innovation Lab, and product demos run on artificial models (2026 rules). We build your sawbones station and book lab time when the demo needs real tissue.

Organizer rule

FDA status signs, 18-point minimum

Any product not FDA-cleared for the use shown, or not sold in the U.S., is displayed only with a sign stating its clearance status in type of at least 18 points (2026 rules). We print the exhibitor-supplied wording into holders beside each device.

Organizer rule

No branded pens, notepads or mugs

Rule 49 bars non-educational branded promotional items, exempts medical textbooks and anatomical models, and holds any other handout below $100 in fair market value; raffles need NASS approval in advance (2026 rules). We give the counter space to models, guides and samples instead.

Organizer rule

Official photographer only

Only NASS's official photographer shoots in the exhibit hall, other photo or video work needs written approval, and full-time staff may film their own booth only when attendees are out of the hall (2026 rules). We schedule your booth photography for non-exhibit hours.

04 Designing for spinal implant, biologics, navigation and spine care device makers at NASS Annual Meeting

Four things we get right for NASS Annual Meeting exhibitors

Side and back spine X-rays on a lightbox with curvature angle measurements marked1

Demo on models, never tissue

NASS bars procedures on human or animal tissue anywhere on the exhibit floor except the Surgical Innovation Lab, and punishes breaches harder than other violations. We build a sawbones station with a lit work surface, a close-view camera feeding an overhead screen and a reset drawer for screws and inserts.

Female surgeon in a blue gown, cap and mask holding a surgical instrument by a window2

Clearance signs in 18-point type

Products not FDA-cleared for the use shown need a status sign beside the device in type of at least 18 points, and investigational displays carry objective statements only (2026 rules). We design the sign holders into each plinth, so the wording stays legible and reads as part of the booth.

Woman clinician in a mask and gown holding a spine X-ray up to window light3

Inline sides stop at four feet

On a NASS inline the 8-foot height is allowed only within 5 feet of the back wall, everything forward stops at 4 feet, and perimeter inlines may reach 12 feet (2026 rules). We put tall graphics on the back wall and keep product towers low and forward.

4

Hand over knowledge, not pens

NASS rule 49 bans branded giveaways such as pens, notepads and mugs, and caps other handouts below $100 in fair market value, with medical textbooks and anatomical models exempt (2026 rules). We plan the counter around what can change hands: anatomical models, technique guides and product samples, which NASS lets you distribute without approval.

Logistics for NASS Annual Meeting 2027, handled

NASS names its official contractors in the Exhibitor Service Manual; in 2026 T3 Expo was the general service contractor, Encore approved any rigging over 250 pounds, and the EAC form and certificate of insurance were due September 10. Exhibit labor in Boston is union: Carpenters Local 327 takes on most substantial booth assembly at the BCEC through the official contractor. We file the EAC paperwork, ship crates to the advance warehouse, order electrical through the in-house vendor and run install with our project manager and vetted local labor. Staff housed at the Westin Boston Seaport District cross a skybridge into the hall, which makes a midday restock of demo models easy.

Hall rules, drayage estimates and freight deadlines for this building are in our Boston Convention & Exhibition Center exhibitor guide.

Hall guide

The Signature Boston calendar lists NASS 2027 at the BCEC, a single-level exhibit floor in Boston's Seaport District. Here is how the building and NASS's own floor rules shape your booth.

Exhibit floor, three bays

516,000 contiguous square feet on one level, which the venue sections off or links into one large floor for a big show.

Our advice: Aisle traffic depends on your booth number, so we finish the layout only after booth selection and face the demo toward the busier aisle.

Hall perimeter inlines

Under NASS's 2026 display rules, inline booths on the hall perimeter may reach 12 feet, against 8 feet for inlines elsewhere.

Our advice: If you want a tall back wall without island pricing, ask for a perimeter inline at selection; we design the extra 4 feet as a lit header.

Westin Boston Seaport District skybridge

A skybridge runs from the Westin Boston Seaport District straight into the BCEC, and a cluster of newer Seaport hotels sits a short walk away.

Our advice: A team staying at the Westin can restock demo models and implant trays between sessions, so we size booth storage for one day, not the whole meeting.

What Purple handles

  • Sawbones demo stations with close-view cameras
  • FDA clearance-status signs set in 18-point type

NASS Annual Meeting exhibitor questions

Questions exhibitors ask us before NASS Annual Meeting

How much does a booth at NASS 2027 cost?

Start with a 10×20 inline: our rentals run $7,500 to $15,000, and NASS charged $8,300 for that space in 2026, at $41.50 a square foot. A custom 20×20 island runs $50,000 to $120,000 to build, on space that cost $18,600 in 2026 including the $2,000 island fee. Rigging, Boston drayage and demo models move the total.

When do we need to commit to a NASS 2027 booth?

Early. Space goes out in Priority Points order, and for the 2026 meeting the priority application deadline was March 27, 2026, more than six months before opening day. NASS has announced a new priority points structure for 2027. Purple's own cutoff is design approval in early July 2027, which leaves time to file island renderings and contractor forms.

Can we rent a booth for NASS, and what does a rental include?

Yes. Our rental covers the frame, printed fabric graphics, lighting, an implant plinth, a sawbones counter with locking storage, freight, install and dismantle on one fixed proposal. With a 2026 inline, NASS supplied just pipe and drape (an 8-foot backdrop, 3-foot rails) plus a 7-by-44-inch name sign, and the rental replaces that backdrop with a branded wall.

Can we set up our own booth at the BCEC?

Only light work. Boston exhibit labor is union, and most substantial booth assembly at the Menino center goes to Carpenters Local 327 through the official contractor. Under the 2026 rules a company bringing its own builder filed an Exhibitor Appointed Contractor form with NASS, and badged staff entered the floor one hour before opening. We file that form and run the install crew.

Can we do cadaver or hands-on demos at our NASS booth?

Not inside the booth. NASS rules bar any procedure on human or animal tissue on the exhibit floor outside the Surgical Innovation Lab, so booth demos run on artificial models. For real tissue, book a lab session: in 2026 two hours cost $15,000 with four stations and a standard C-arm, with specimens available through STI.

What does drayage cost at the BCEC, and who pays it?

The exhibitor pays it, billed by the official contractor at its kit rate, and NASS has not published a 2027 rate. Our planning figure for this building comes from another show's 2026 rate sheet: $323.95 a hundredweight when crates go via the advance warehouse, 200 pounds minimum. Implant trays and demo models add weight, so we consolidate crates and quote drayage as its own line.

Can we reuse our NASS booth at other shows?

We build the plinths, demo counters and walls to reconfigure, so a NASS inline can follow you to the AAOS Annual Meeting, the CNS Annual Meeting or OMTEC with new graphics. Between shows it sits in our storage, gets a graphics refresh for the next audience and ships to whichever advance warehouse the next organizer names.

Can we get a peninsula or end-cap booth at NASS?

No. NASS does not sell end-cap or peninsula booths, so the choice is an inline row or an island open on all four aisles. Under the 2026 display rules inline back walls stop at 8 feet, or 12 feet on the hall perimeter, and islands may rise to 25 feet. For height without island pricing, ask for a perimeter inline at booth selection.

Do you handle the NASS contractor orders and rigging?

Yes. NASS routes drayage, rigging, cleaning, catering, electrical and plumbing through its official contractors; in 2026 that meant T3 Expo for general services and Encore for any sign, truss or lighting over 250 pounds. We place every order from the Exhibitor Service Manual, book the hanging sign with the right vendor and file your return bills of lading.

When is NASS 2027?

The 42nd NASS Annual Meeting runs September 22–25, 2027 in Boston, Massachusetts, three weeks earlier in the calendar than the 2026 meeting, held October 14–17 in San Antonio. The 2027 Technical Exhibition dates are not confirmed yet; in 2026 it opened October 14 to 16.

Where is NASS 2027 held?

NASS 2027 meets at the BCEC, officially the Thomas M. Menino Convention & Exhibition Center, at 415 Summer Street in the Seaport District; the venue's own event calendar lists the meeting. Logan International Airport is an eight-minute taxi ride away, and the free Silver Line from Logan stops at World Trade Center, across from the building.

How many people attend NASS?

NASS reports its reach in members, countries and research. The society has more than 8,000 members, 65 countries were represented at NASS 2024, and the 2026 meeting drew 1,469 abstract submissions after a record 1,689 in 2025. Its 2026 prospectus adds that 86% of attendees spent over two hours in the Technical Exhibition.

Who organizes the NASS Annual Meeting?

The North American Spine Society, a nonprofit scientific and educational association based in Burr Ridge, Illinois, with more than 8,000 members across the spine care disciplines. NASS runs the Technical Exhibition itself, books space through its own exhibits staff and treats the exhibits as an integral part of the society's educational activity.

How do I get a booth at NASS?

Apply online through the NASS exhibits page. For 2026 that meant a 50% deposit and three preferred zones, with Priority Points (one per 10×10 bought plus consecutive years across the last five meetings) setting each booth-selection appointment; NASS says points get a new structure for 2027. Companies new to NASS can start with its Potential New Exhibitors form.

Before you sign with anyone

Five questions to ask any exhibit builder for NASS Annual Meeting:

  1. Is every fee on the proposal, including what the show contractor bills?
  2. Who builds the booth: your own shop or a subcontractor?
  3. Will your project manager be on the floor for install and dismantle?
  4. What exactly is in the rental, and what is billed by the show?
  5. Where does the booth go after the show, and what does storage cost?

Common situations

Already own a booth? We refresh the graphics, repair what is worn, ship it, install it and store it between shows. You keep the structure you paid for.

Exhibiting from outside the US? We are your team on the ground: freight to the advance warehouse, show-service orders, installation and storage, with one project manager answering your emails in your time zone.

Short on time? A rental with your graphics can be ready in two to three weeks. We tell you on the first call what is realistic for your date.
