Miami Beach Convention Center: the exhibitor's guide

Half a million square feet of exhibit space rebuilt for $640 million, six blocks from the ocean, with Art Basel week traffic and a hurricane season to plan around. How the MBCC works after its reinvention.

Why this page exists

The MBCC is the venue where the show is half the event and the city is the other half. Art Basel, eMerge Americas, the boat show and the jewelry shows all bring buyers who came for Miami Beach as much as for the booth. That changes what a booth has to do, and it changes the logistics: one campus on a barrier island, one causeway system, and hotels that price like it.

This guide covers the rebuilt building, the labor and exclusives, drayage that runs above Orlando, a travel-time planner for a city where ten minutes on the map is forty on the road, and the calendar. Purple ships to Miami Beach from Fishkill and has built here since 2017.

The building

Four halls, one campus

The 2020 rebuild kept the footprint and replaced almost everything inside it. The halls are contiguous on one level with docks on the west side, the Grand Ballroom sits above, and the campus includes outdoor terraces and Pride Park for activations.

History

Clay, Liston and two conventions

Miami Beach built the hall in 1958 to fill hotels in the off-season. Within fifteen years it had hosted the fight that made Muhammad Ali, three national political conventions and eleven Miss Universe pageants.

1958

The Miami Beach Exhibition Hall opens in October: 100,000 sq ft, "the largest exhibition center in the South," beside the Municipal Auditorium where Jackie Gleason taped his show.

1961

Floyd Patterson beats Ingemar Johansson in their third fight here. Martin Luther King Jr. addresses a Lutheran youth convention in August.

1964

February 25: Cassius Clay beats Sonny Liston for the heavyweight title in the hall and announces himself as Muhammad Ali days later.

1967

The Convention Hall is added, built to hold a national political convention.

1968 and 1972

The Republican National Convention nominates Nixon here twice; the 1972 Democratic convention nominates McGovern in the same building a month earlier.

1989

A $92 million renovation doubles the center.

2015–2020

The $640 million reinvention: 500,000 sq ft of exhibit space, the 60,000 sq ft Grand Ballroom, four junior ballrooms, 84 meeting rooms, LEED Silver, and a new campus with Pride Park.

2025–2027

An 800-room Grand Hyatt headquarter hotel rises on the campus, the first attached hotel in the center's history, scheduled to open in November 2027.

Rules of the floor

Labor, exclusives and island rules

Labor

Florida rules, Miami contractors

Right-to-work applies: full-time staff may set up with hand tools within show limits. Contract labor through the show contractor or an approved EAC; Purple files as yours.

Exclusives

Venue-exclusive services

Rigging, electrical, internet, cleaning and catering are exclusive to the center's providers; the show kit carries the current list. Order early; Art Basel week rates are not the rest of the year's.

Drayage

Above Orlando, below Las Vegas

Planning rates run about $170 per hundredweight with the standard minimum and surcharges. Island access adds marshaling time, not rate.

Access

Three causeways, one dock side

Trucks reach the west docks via the MacArthur, Venetian or Julia Tuttle causeways. Marshaling is off-island; off-target trucks lose their slot for hours.

Fire code

Miami Beach Fire Prevention

Covered and multilevel exhibits need plan review; thresholds are similar to Orlando's; confirm the current threshold when the fire plan is submitted. Purple prepares the package.

Weather

Hurricane season and king tides

June to November for storms; fall king tides can flood streets near the center. Purple ships advance warehouse with margin and has a storm plan for freight in transit.

Move-out

Empties and the MHA

EMPTY stickers on unpack; MHA before leaving. Purple routes the booth back to storage or on to your next show.

Insurance

Certificates

Logistics

Hotels, causeways, crew logistics

  • Airport: Miami International is 30 minutes on a normal day, more during shows. Fort Lauderdale is 45 minutes and often cheaper to fly into.
  • Causeways: MacArthur from downtown and the port, Venetian from Wynwood, Julia Tuttle from the airport. Pick by origin, not by map distance.
  • Freight: west docks off Convention Center Drive; marshaling off-island per the contractor.
  • Parking: the center's garages fill on show days; crews park at the 17th Street garages.
  • Purple: ships from Fishkill. Miami Beach city page coming with the Florida set.

Questions

Miami Beach Convention Center FAQ

Is the MBCC union?

Florida is right-to-work, so full-time staff may set up with hand tools within show limits. Rigging, electrical and several other services are exclusive to the center's providers.

Why is everything more expensive during Art Basel?

Because the whole island sells out. Hotel rates triple, labor is booked months ahead and causeway traffic doubles travel times. Book the block and the crew in the summer.

Which airport should I use?

Miami International is closer on the map; Fort Lauderdale is often cheaper and, outside rush hour, only fifteen minutes longer. Use the planner above.

How does drayage compare with Orlando?

About 10 to 15 percent higher per hundredweight, with the same minimums and surcharges. The bigger cost is time: off-island marshaling and causeway traffic.

Is there an attached hotel?

Not yet. The 800-room Grand Hyatt on the campus is under construction; until it opens, the Loews and the Fontainebleau carry the big blocks.

Can I do an outdoor activation?

Yes, on the terraces or in Pride Park, with venue and city permits and a weather-rated build.

What about hurricane season?

June to November. Fall shows also face king tides that can flood nearby streets. Purple ships advance warehouse with margin and keeps a storm plan for freight in transit.

Can my staff hand-carry?

One person, one trip, no wheels, within the show's rules. Anything on a cart goes through the dock.

Where do crews stay?

Washington Avenue and mid-beach three-star hotels within fifteen minutes on foot; downtown in Art Basel week if the island is sold out.

What does Purple do that the contractor does not?

Designs, builds, ships, installs, supervises and stores the booth, prepares fire-review packages, and files the EAC and MHA paperwork.
