Tampa Convention Center: the exhibitor's guide

A 200,000 sq ft hall on the water at the mouth of the Hillsborough River, three hotels on the same block, and a streetcar at the door. Tampa is the easiest big-city show in Florida to move in and out of.

Why this page exists

Tampa is a mid-size hall that behaves like a big one because everything is within a block: the docks, three hotels, the Riverwalk, the streetcar to Ybor City. Exhibitor Magazine moved its own show, EXHIBITORLIVE, here in 2026, which tells you what the industry thinks of the building.

This guide covers the single-level hall and the waterfront meeting rooms, the city-run rules, drayage at Florida rates, and a planner for a downtown where the answer is usually "walk." Purple builds here from Fishkill and has an Orlando-Tampa circuit for Florida clients.

History

From Fort Brooke to Water Street

1824

Fort Brooke is established on the site as the first American outpost on Tampa Bay. The town grows around it through two Seminole wars and the Civil War; the Army leaves in 1883.

1990

The city clears the industrial waterfront and opens the $140 million Tampa Convention Center in October, replacing the aging Curtis Hixon Hall, financed with municipal bonds.

2000

The 27-story Marriott Waterside opens a block away, the hotel the 1990 plan had promised.

2006

Embassy Suites opens across Franklin Street with a skybridge into the center.

2022

The JW Marriott Water Street opens on the last corner of the block, with a 30,000 sq ft ballroom, as the Water Street district rises around Amalie Arena.

2024

The $44 million expansion adds 18 waterfront meeting rooms, nine opening straight into the hall, the largest project since the building opened.

2026

EXHIBITORLIVE moves to Tampa; the center forecasts 101 events and $149 million in economic impact for the year.

Rules of the floor

Labor, exclusives and city rules

Labor

Non-union, city-run

Full-time staff may set up with hand tools. Outside labor through the contractor or Purple as EAC, filed with the show and the city.

Exclusives

In-house electrical, rigging and internet

Ordered from the center, not the contractor; early-bird pricing closes about three weeks out; the show kit carries the current list.

Drayage

Florida rates

Planning rates around $155 per hundredweight, standard minimum and surcharges.

Dock

East docks off Channelside Drive

Direct access from the Selmon Expressway; marshaling per the contractor, usually within a mile.

Fire code

Tampa Fire Rescue

Covered and multilevel review; thresholds similar to Orlando's; confirm the current threshold when the fire plan is submitted.

Weather

Hurricane season and storm surge

The center sits on the water; fall shows carry surge risk. Purple ships advance warehouse with margin.

Events

Gasparilla and game days

The late-January pirate parade and Lightning home games at Amalie Arena close streets around the block. Check the schedule against move-in.

Questions

Tampa Convention Center FAQ

Is the Tampa Convention Center union?

No. It is city-run in a right-to-work state; full-time staff may set up with hand tools. Electrical, rigging and internet are in-house exclusives.

How big a booth fits?

The hall takes islands, double-decks and hanging signs. It is a single level with concrete floors and direct docks.

Which hotel should I book?

Embassy Suites for the skybridge, the Marriott or JW Marriott Water Street for the block, and crews at the downtown three-stars ten minutes away.

How does drayage compare with Orlando?

About the same. Tampa and Orlando share contractors and Florida rates.

Can I run Tampa and Orlando shows in one trip?

Yes, they are 85 minutes apart. Purple runs a Florida circuit with one crew lead.

What about Gasparilla?

The late-January parade closes Bayshore and downtown streets for a weekend. If your move-in lands on it, freight windows shift; Purple checks the date at kickoff.

Is there an outdoor exhibit area?

Limited; the waterfront plaza is used for receptions and small activations with city permits.

What does Purple do that the contractor does not?

Designs, builds, ships, installs, supervises and stores the booth, and files the EAC and MHA paperwork.
