Buffalo Convention Center: the exhibitor's guide
Western New York's convention center, renovated and renamed in 2023, with 110,000 square feet of space downtown, a skywalk to the Hyatt, and the shows that serve a bi-national market twenty minutes from the Canadian border and Niagara Falls.
Buffalo Convention Center · 153 Franklin StWhy this page exists
Buffalo is the only U.S. convention city where a show draws from Toronto as naturally as from Rochester. The convention center is downtown, a block from the theater district, and it carries Western New York's home shows, medical meetings, comic cons and the World's Largest Disco. It is also an older building with real limits: one main hall, a modest ceiling and a downtown dock. Knowing them is the difference between a smooth show and a surprise.
This guide covers the halls after the renovation, labor at a county-owned venue, drayage well below the coasts, a freight countdown built around the Thruway and lake-effect snow, the shows on the calendar, hotels on the skywalk, and the history of a city that once had more millionaires per capita than any in America.
The building
The halls after the renovation
The 2021–2023 renovation rebuilt the entrance, concourses, lighting and wayfinding and raised ceilings in the meeting areas, but the building's footprint is the 1978 hall plus the 2010 expansion. Plan to it.
| Space | What it is | Typical shows | Booth planning note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main exhibit hall | About 64,000 sq ft, divisible, with high ceilings, room for about 350 booths and dock access. | Home shows, comic cons, consumer shows, exhibit halls of up to 300 booths | Islands and hanging signs within the height; forklifts routine. Check the column map for the older section. |
| Ballroom | 12,367 sq ft with banquet seating for about 1,000, plus 8,800 sq ft of pre-function space, on the upper level. | General sessions, banquets, the Disco's dance floor is downstairs | Carpeted room: floor protection, lighter builds. |
| Meeting rooms | 21 meeting rooms within 46,000 sq ft of flexible meeting space. | Breakouts | Hand-carry only. |
| Lobby and Franklin Street entrance | Rebuilt in 2023 with color-changing lighting panels and heated sidewalks. | Registration, sponsor activations | Egress rules apply. |
| Docks | Loading docks off the side streets; dock assignments come with the show kit. | All freight | Downtown streets; windows scheduled by the show. |
History
The Pan-American to the Disco
Buffalo hosted a world's fair in 1901 and has been building for crowds ever since. The convention center opened in 1978 and has been argued over, expanded and renovated in the decades since.
The Pan-American Exposition brings eight million visitors to Buffalo, then one of the richest cities in America on grain, steel and Erie Canal trade. President McKinley is shot at the fair; Theodore Roosevelt takes the oath of office on Delaware Avenue.

City Hall opens, a 32-story Art Deco tower that still anchors Niagara Square a few blocks from the center.
The Buffalo Convention Center opens with a 64,410-square-foot hall on Franklin Street.
The first World's Largest Disco is held in the hall; revived in 1994, it has sold out every November since and raises millions for Camp Good Days.
An expansion adds meeting and pre-function space and the Buffalo Niagara name.
A renovation rebuilds the entrance, concourses and lighting, raises ceilings and renames the building the Buffalo Convention Center. Erie County continues to study a replacement or larger expansion; 86 percent of residents polled in 2019 favored investing in a new facility.
Rules of the floor
Labor, exclusives and rules
County venue, contractor rules
Exhibit labor follows the show contractor; exhibitors may typically set up their own booths within show limits; the show kit sets the exact allowance. Purple crews build directly.
Well below the coasts
Plan about $90 per hundredweight where a contractor handles freight.
Lake-effect snow
November to March, a lake-effect band can close the Thruway for a day. Purple ships a day early for winter Buffalo shows.
Canadian exhibitors and buyers
Toronto is two hours away. Canadian freight needs a customs broker and an ATA carnet or temporary import; Purple's Canadian clients ship to Fishkill and cross with us.
Buffalo Fire Department
Flame certificates, covered booths by approval, permits for vehicles and cooking.
Venue services
Electrical, internet, cleaning, security and catering through the venue or its providers; the show kit carries the current list.
Design to the older hall
The original hall's ceiling limits tall structures and some hanging signs. Purple checks the height map before designing anything over 16 ft.
Certificates

For most shows, yes, within the show's limits. Purple crews build directly.
How much is drayage?
Plan about $90 per hundredweight where a contractor handles freight.
What about snow?
Lake-effect bands can close the Thruway for a day between November and March. Ship a day early; Purple does for every winter Buffalo show.
