Wildwoods Convention Center: the exhibitor's guide

An arena and exhibit hall built into the Boardwalk itself, on a barrier island two hours south of Atlantic City, where WWE Raw plays every July and the doo-wop motels outnumber the chain hotels.

Why this page exists

Wildwood is the most unusual venue in this guide: an arena and exhibit hall built directly into the Boardwalk, on an island whose year-round population is a fraction of its summer crowd. Owned by the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority and built by tearing a hole in the Boardwalk itself, it hosts everything from WWE's biggest annual house show to the largest high school basketball tournament in the country. For exhibitors it means a real 260,000 sq ft building with beach-town logistics.

This guide covers the exhibit space and the Oceanfront Arena, labor in a non-right-to-work state, drayage, a freight countdown built around shore-season traffic, the shows and annual events that fill the calendar, hotels among the Wildwoods' famous doo-wop motels, and the history of a building that replaced an 18,000 sq ft hall with one more than fourteen times the size.

The building

The exhibit space and arena

The center replaced the original 1972 Convention Hall, torn down the year after the new building opened, creating the dramatic Boardwalk entrance the center uses today.

History

A hole in the Boardwalk

Wildwood's first convention hall was a modest storefront-fronted building from 1972. Replacing it meant literally cutting into the Boardwalk to build something fourteen times the size.

1972

Wildwood Convention Hall opens at 4522 Ocean Avenue: an 18,000 sq ft building with shops along the Boardwalk frontage, serving the resort town through the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

1999–2000

Growing demand outpaces the old hall. The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority breaks ground on a replacement in 2000, tearing a 40-foot hole in the Boardwalk to build the new structure.

2001

The Wildwoods Convention Center opens: 260,000 sq ft of exhibition space and the 7,000-seat Oceanfront Arena, designed by LMN Architects.

2002

The old 1972 hall is razed, opening the dramatic Boardwalk entrance that defines the building today.

2005–present

WWE's Raw brand stages an annual event every July, setting an attendance record in 2005; annual 1950s and 1960s nostalgia concerts and the country's largest high school basketball tournament, running December 26 through New Year's Eve, become fixtures.

2020

Then-President Donald Trump holds a campaign rally at the center in January, drawing national coverage.

Rules of the floor

Labor, exclusives and rules

Labor

Union state, authority rules

New Jersey has no right-to-work law; the center is authority-owned and exhibit labor follows the show contractor; the show kit sets the exact allowance.

Drayage

Shore rates

Plan about $115 per hundredweight where a contractor handles freight.

Access

One road onto the island

The Garden State Parkway's southern spur is the main route; summer shore traffic adds real time on weekends. Purple ships with margin for beach-season shows.

Fire code

New Jersey fire code

Flame certificates for fabrics, aisles per the approved plan, permits for cooking and vehicles.

Exclusives

Authority services

Electrical, internet, cleaning and security through the venue or its providers; the show kit carries the current list.
