History
The Wizard of Menlo Park
Edison Township changed its name for the inventor who worked a few miles from where the exhibit hall stands today, and it has spent the century since becoming one of New Jersey's busiest commercial corridors.
Raritan Township is formed from portions of Piscataway and Woodbridge Townships in Central Jersey's Raritan Valley.
Thomas Edison sets up his home and research laboratory in the township's Menlo Park section, earning the nickname "the Wizard of Menlo Park" and amassing a record 1,093 patents, including the phonograph and the practical incandescent lightbulb, before his death in 1931.
The township is officially renamed Edison in his honor.
The New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center opens on Sunfield Avenue, giving Central Jersey a single-level, 135,500 sq ft exhibit hall in one of the state's fastest-growing commercial areas.
Edison grows into the state's sixth-most-populous municipality and a major hub for South Asian American commerce and culture, centered on the Oak Tree Road corridor known as Little India.
The NJCEC hosts AnimeNEXT and a rotating calendar of regional trade shows, drawing on the density of Central and North Jersey without the cost or complexity of a city-center venue.
