History
1965 to today
Groundbreaking happens June 25, 1962; the Washington Hilton opens March 25, 1965, designed by architect William B. Tabler with a sinuous curved facade and uniform precast concrete panels that were architecturally notable at the time.
President Reagan is shot outside the hotel while walking to his limousine after a speech, in an assassination attempt that also wounded three others. The incident gives the building its enduring nickname, the "Hinckley Hilton."
The hotel has hosted the White House Correspondents' Dinner for decades, making it one of the most closely secured hotels in the country during that event and reinforcing its position at the center of Washington's political and media calendar.
