Why this page exists
The Meadowlands Exposition Center is the New York area's pressure-release valve: a real exhibit hall, six miles from Manhattan, with parking exhibitors can actually use and drayage a fraction of the Javits rate. It has hosted the East Coast's biggest comic convention and a My Little Pony fan convention that made national news, alongside the trade and consumer shows that make up its bread and butter. For a show that doesn't need Manhattan's scale or its prices, the MEC is the practical answer.

The building
The hall and the Harmon Meadow complex
The MEC sits inside the Plaza at Harmon Meadow, a 3.5-million-square-foot retail, hotel and office complex in the Secaucus Meadowlands. The exhibit hall is a single contiguous space with its own entrance and dock.

History
Pig farms to the Plaza
Secaucus was the butt of a hundred jokes about pig farms for most of the twentieth century. The Meadowlands Exposition Center sits on the site of what that reputation became once the farms closed.
Secaucus becomes home to about 55 pig farms, peaking at nearly 250,000 pigs during World War II, outnumbering the town's human residents sixteen to one and supplying the meat markets of Newark and New York.
A 1947 ordinance bans new farms and the last pig operations close by court order, ending the era that gave Secaucus its odor and its punchline reputation.
Hartz Mountain Industries develops the Plaza at Harmon Meadow, a mixed-use complex of hotels, offices and retail on 175 acres in the Secaucus Meadowlands, six miles from Midtown.
The Meadowlands Exposition Center opens inside the Plaza with 61,000 sq ft of contiguous exhibit space, giving the New York region a real trade show hall outside Manhattan's prices.
The MEC hosts BronyCon, a fan convention for the animated series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, drawing national media attention to the venue.
East Coast Comicon relocates to the MEC from Asbury Park, becoming one of the region's largest pop-culture conventions outside Manhattan.

Trucks from Manhattan use the Lincoln Tunnel; from the rest of the region, Route 3 and the New Jersey Turnpike feed the complex directly.

Getting there and staying
- By car: Route 3 or the New Jersey Turnpike to Secaucus; the Lincoln Tunnel from Manhattan is about 20 minutes off-peak.
- By rail: NJ Transit to Secaucus Junction, then a short walk or shuttle to Harmon Meadow.
- Airports: Newark Liberty is about 20 minutes; JFK and LaGuardia are 35 to 60 minutes depending on traffic.
- Freight: dedicated dock for the exhibit hall; 6,000 parking spaces across the complex.
- Crew: Purple's crews come down from Fishkill in about 90 minutes.
