Why this page exists
Rochester is a technical town. Its shows are about optics, photonics, imaging, precision manufacturing and the healthcare systems around the University of Rochester, and the exhibitors bring equipment that has to be handled properly. The Riverside center is a well-run, mid-size building with a real exhibit hall, a downtown dock and a connected hotel, and it runs with the calm of a venue whose founding director led it for thirty years.

The building
The hall and the ballroom
Polshek's building steps down to the river with the exhibit hall at the core, the ballroom and meeting rooms around it, and a riverside terrace. The Hyatt Regency connects by an enclosed skyway across Main Street.

History
Flour City to Flower City
Rochester grew on the Genesee's waterfalls, first as the largest flour-milling city in America and then as the home of Eastman Kodak. The convention center sits on the river a few blocks below the High Falls.
The Erie Canal crosses the Genesee on an aqueduct in downtown Rochester and the city becomes America's first boomtown, milling flour for the East Coast. The Aqueduct Building beside the convention center takes its name from it.
George Eastman introduces the Kodak camera. Within decades Kodak, Bausch & Lomb and later Xerox make Rochester the imaging capital of the world, and the University of Rochester's Institute of Optics, founded in 1929, becomes the first optics school in the country.
The Rochester War Memorial opens on the site of a tobacco factory; its Mercury statue goes into storage until 1973, when it returns to the skyline atop the Aqueduct Building next to today's convention center.
The Rochester Riverside Convention Center opens in August, designed by James Stewart Polshek and built for $40 million with state funding, on the east bank of the Genesee at Main Street.
Founding executive director Joseph A. Floreano dies after 30 years leading the center; the city renames the building in his honor.
More than 300,000 visitors a year and $30 million in economic impact, with the region's optics, photonics, manufacturing and healthcare shows on the calendar and the Hyatt Regency across the skyway.

Exhibit labor follows the show contractor; exhibitors may typically set up their own booths within show limits; the show kit sets the exact allowance. Purple crews build directly.

Plan about $85 per hundredweight where a contractor handles freight.
Optics and precision gear
Lasers, microscopes and metrology equipment ride in Purple's climate-stable trailer and get special-handling flags at the dock. Laser demos need the show's safety officer sign-off.
Lake-effect and the Thruway
Rochester gets lake-effect snow from Ontario; ship a day early between November and March.
Rochester Fire Department
Flame certificates, covered booths by approval, permits for vehicles and cooking.

- By car: Interstate 490 to downtown exits; 4.5 hours from Fishkill, 1 hour from Buffalo, 1.5 from Syracuse.
- Airport: Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International is 15 minutes.
